New Boat, New Philosophy, New Look!

Boat art is more than having a logo, it’s an opportunity to define your sailing philosophy!

We loved our original boat name and that definitely works for us still.

<aside> 💚 AWEN: inspiration; the breath that inspires you; a poetic muse.

In old Breton, AWEN means divine inspiration and was used to describe the 'flowing energy that is the essence of life.' It also refers to the muse who inspires us all towards our destiny and was derived from the word 'breeze.' We believe this is quite fitting!

We also liked our original artwork, but it didn’t fit the look of this new performance boat at all.

We added the three lines to the E, (from the sails on the boat) with black because we were concerned you wouldn’t be able to see the bright green in all conditions and it would just look like AW_N 🙂 It definitely makes a difference over longer distances, even though up close it looks like a logo diversion.

When we went through the option selection process we had to make many individual decisions but we wanted to ensure we were consistent with our choices so we have a cohesive boat in the end. We decided to select three attributes that would define our sailing philosophy and sum up what was important to us on the boat. This helped with boat decisions, and with the whole artwork question.

We got the idea from product design principles that Outremer also uses as they design a brand new boat. It provides a clear direction during the design process and it helps communicate the essence of the project.

After a lot of brainstorming we came up with the following three attributes that were important to us when we were making decisions on our boat:

<aside> ⭐ LEAN

We wanted to keep it light and relatively simple. Lean to us is defined being a harmonious equilibrium between the vessel's design and the water, as we wanted to accomplish good weight distribution and simplistic elements to help the boat perform its best.

<aside> ⭐ MODERN

</aside>

Modern refers to contemporary design and technology, and we wanted to incorporate the latest innovations such as Lithium, Starlink, SailSense, and SEA.ia.

This isn’t a technical term, but a mindset of courage and bold ability to take on a circumnavigation with confidence. To us, we wanted to describe a boat that exudes confidence and the ability to tackle challenging conditions with ease. It embodies safety, seaworthiness, coolness and a no-nonsense attitude.

In the end, we felt these key attributes helped us a lot to make difficult decisions and now we feel AWEN matches these traits.

Now we might need to define three new keywords around our cruising lifestyle so we remain consistent with our cruising decisions. ‘Lean’ might be tough to live by the longer we stay in France with its amazing food. 🥐
